Watch for traps that can make you sin. Let's say you are a girl, and you know full well that the boy inviting you to his house lives alone. Yet, you say to yourself, "Oh, he is a Christian brother, filled with the Holy Ghost and prays in tongues. I will just go and spend time with the brother—nothing will happen." You choose to go, and not only that, but you also choose to wear clothes that communicate the wrong message. Don't go by yourself; take a friend with you. Don't wear anything that will cause the brother to stumble. The Bible says, "Woe unto him that causes man to stumble." Keep away from worldly enticements. Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, and as He teaches them, in one of the prayer points, He says, "Lead us not into temptation." I would like to say to you: Lead not yourself into temptation and keep away from the appearance of evil. You know fully well that you have a weakness in a certain area of your life, yet you constantly find yourself feeding that weakness. Here you are, trying to quit drinking beer, but you spend your day at the beer hall. You have a sexual addiction, and you are not married, yet you spend your day watching romantic movies. Be careful what you feed your spirit. You need to guard and monitor what your eyes see, what your ears hear, and what your mouth eats or drinks. You must protect every gateway to your soul. Flee when you see yourself getting trapped; don’t stand and let sin overtake you. 2 Timothy 2:22 KJV "[22] Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart." If we take a closer look at the word flee in Greek (pheugō), it metaphorically conveys the idea of shunning or avoiding something abhorrent, especially vices. It implies the sense of being saved by flight—escaping safely out of danger. Poetically, it means to flee away or vanish. If you walk into someone's yard without realizing they own a pit bull, the moment you see the dog, you immediately recognize it’s not friendly. Without thinking, you will take an about-turn and escape with your life. In the same manner, the Bible tells us to escape the lusts of the flesh. We need to escape with our lives, and we can only do this by shunning and avoiding all signs of evil. We need to run away from sin as though we are escaping a potential dog bite. Romans 6:16 KJV "[16] Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death or of obedience unto righteousness?" To yield in the English lexicon simply means to surrender or relinquish control to another. The Greek lexicon metaphorically conveys the thought of bringing oneself into someone’s fellowship or intimacy. Yielding is simply giving in, losing control, and subjecting your soul to the lordship of another. From reading the Holy Scriptures in Romans 8:2, we realize that two forces are constantly seeking mastery over our souls: the law of sin and death (the flesh) and the law of the Spirit of life. Elohim makes it very clear that the power of choice is in the hands of mankind. Deuteronomy 30:19 KJV "[19] ...I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." Our lives are a succession of the choices we make. We are where we are today because of what we chose to yield our souls to yesterday. But we shouldn't be short-sighted—seeing only ourselves—but should look beyond ourselves and begin making decisions with the next generation in mind. When you choose a lifestyle that is pleasing to God, it will become an inheritance that you pass on to the next generation. There is another word for yielding, and that is submit. James 4:7 KJV "[7] Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." When you submit something, you lose control and power over it. Only the new owner will decide what to do with it. Let's say you have a vehicle you are selling. The moment you submit the books of the vehicle to the new owner, you immediately have no power over it. If he chooses to modify it, that is up to him. If he chooses to repaint it, that is also up to him. Once you submit something to its new owner, you lose control and ownership. This is the same when you surrender your life into the hands of God—it stops being yours, and from that point forward, you no longer consider how you feel but rather the facts of God's Word concerning your life. Are you sick and tired of trying to overcome sin in your own strength? Do you find yourself doing the very thing you wish not to do? Are you struggling with addiction? That is evidence that you have either consciously or subconsciously submitted yourself under the influence of the law of sin and death. But the good news is: God has given you the grace to resist the devil, and he will flee with terror from your presence as you reflect the blinding Shekinah glory of God over your life.
